As you might know already, batteries of all kinds are extremely toxic and should be disposed of accordingly. In the case of car batteries, proper disposing and/or recycling is very important. Just look at the basic car battery specification. It is a big plastic container filled with acid and lead, none of which is remotely biodegradable. That is why the industry invested a lot in recycling programs for car batteries. Today, we will tell you about several ways you can dispose of your old car batteries in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. You might find this article very important since a car battery cannot be thrown away along with regular household waste by law!

1. Recycling centre

The first solution is to take the old car battery to the recycling center in your area where you will be compensated for the item. Since the car battery contains lead which is highly recyclable or silver in small amounts, which is a precious metal, you can expect some money for your old battery. The prices vary depending on demand for metals but on average you will get 0.20 pounds for a pound of weight. If you know that the average car battery can weigh from 30 to 50 pounds, you can expect to get up to 10 pounds for the old one. The bigger and the heavier the battery is, the more money you will get. For example, big and extremely heavy truck batteries can get you a substantial amount.

The recycling center will crush the battery, neutralize the acid and safely dispose of plastic, retaining lead or silver. Both materials are probably going to be reused again in battery production.

2. Old for new

Some car part shops offer taking your old battery in return for a new one. This is quite a convenient way of disposing of the old and buying a new car battery and getting a small discount. Of course, the shop will recycle the old batteries just like you would but this way you save time and money by doing two things at once. Disposing of the old and shopping for a new car battery at the same time.

Always save a receipt for car battery along with warranty since it could be useful. Manufacturer warranty for car batteries lasts from two to three years, in most cases and if you experience problems sooner, you can always return it and get a new one.

3. Leave it at a service garage

Most car owners don't pay much attention to car battery disposal issue and when the car mechanics install a new one as a part of regular service, they forget about it. This means that your old battery is left in the shop and basically they will earn a few quid by recycling it. We know it is the most convenient way of disposing of it since you don't have to take it to the recycling center or do anything with it. However, we suggest mentioning it to the garage manager and get a small discount on parts or labor. Money saved is money earned and in this economy, every little bit helps.
