Tyre sealants

Tyre sealants have grown in popularity in recent years as they save space and help repair a tyre and get you home safely. Here we explain more.

Use tyre sealants

With many manufacturers not fitting a standard spare tyre to their vehicle means that there is a choice of either a space saver spare wheel - which is a lot smaller and lighter than the normal one - to get you to a repair station or you can use tyre sealants. The latter is also popular with those who want to repair a puncture quickly without having to remove their tyre. New cars tend to have a tyre sealant with a tyre inflator kit so the sealant and compressed air will be injected using the tyre's valves, but those who want to use tyre sealant need to understand a number of things before using them.

Two types of tyre sealant available

There are two types of tyre sealant available which are; pre-puncture sealant which is used for placing in the tyre so there is no loss of air should there be a puncture and post-puncture sealants which are used after a puncture has been detected. You'll need to appreciate: the cause of the puncture, the position of the puncture, how fast and far you have to drive on a flat tyre. To explain more, a pre-puncture tyre sealant is injected through the valve and is designed to prevent air loss. The sealant manufacturer will stipulate that you will need to drive at a recommended speed after filling your tyre with their sealant to help distribute it throughout the tyre. You then should be OK for carrying on with your journey. Should the sealant work - then this will be noticed very quickly – and it may indicate that you don't have a puncture. Before using tyre sealant it is a good idea to check the tyre in case there is a large nail or screw embedded in it which could cause further damage and potentially a blowout. One sign that you have a puncture is that you will see signs of the sealant, which tends to be a type of white latex, on the outside of the tyre shortly after it has been used.

Post-puncture sealants

Post-puncture sealants are the most popular type and used when you spot a puncture and pull over before the tyre becomes overheated. Again, this type of sealant is injected through the valve and compressed air is used to reinflate the tyre. These will not work for all punctures but should you need to repair one quickly to carry on with your journey then tyre sealants are a great idea. However, you will need to have the wheel checked for damage and have the puncture repaired, regardless of the sealant type you use - though you may find that you have to buy a new tyre. Using a sealant shouldn't really be seen as a permanent repair and the sealants come in a range of prices and are available as a tyre sealant on its own or as part of a tyre repair kit which many retailers will offer.
